]]> http://hartselfire.org/news/?feed=rss2&p=1077 0 http://hartselfire.org/news/?p=921 http://hartselfire.org/news/?p=921#comments Tue, 27 Mar 2012 19:45:48 +0000 Cleta http://hartselfire.org/news/?p=921 In our five-year plan, knowing the needs of the District and always working towards goals that will add to the improvement of our ISO rating, it was determined that Hartsel Fire needs a minimum of three additional 2,000 gallon tenders.  The cost of a new tender ranges from $135,000 to $200,000 and used ones range from $85,000 and up.  After much research  into different options and requesting and receiving numerous price quotes it was determined that  by purchasing a used water truck at auction and converting it into a fire truck in-house we could save the District an estimated $25,000 to $30,000 per tender.

The used water truck was purchased at auction in November 2011.  Once the truck arrived in Hartsel, the Chief and some of the volunteers began the task of turning it into a fire truck.  With talent, ingenuity and many long hours and late nights it was converted to a fire truck in-house by:  adding baffling to the tank, adding a 10 inch dump valve to exit the water, re-working the plumbing and valve systems, re-wiring for emergency lights and radio, equipping with hoses, painting, striping and adding lights.  The estimated cost to complete, including firefighting equipment on board came to $45,000.  By purchasing the truck at auction and doing all the necessary work in-house the District has been rewarded with additional savings.

We at Hartsel Fire are all very proud of the way this project has turned out.  We feel this new tender meets the needs of our District and is yet another step towards a lower ISO rating and a safer community.  With pride, Tanker 7-5, also dubbed “Lucky Dawg,”  was completed and put into service in February 2012.

Three years ago Hartsel Fire purchased a used ambulance from South Park Ambulance to replace our aging water rescue van that carries dive equipment, water rescue supplies and pulls the rescue boat. A dive van is an important part of our fleet because our district covers three reservoirs and has a trained dive team.

After completion of Tanker 7-5  in February of this year we were able to start work on the dive van.  The van was painted, lettered, striped and the inside re-configured.  It was completed in mid-March 2012. Just as tanker 7-5. the work on the dive van was also completed in-house.

Our plan  is to use the van for more than a dive van.  It is the Hartsel Fire Special Operations Van slated to be used for mobile command, firefighter rehab, dive team and water rescue. This Special Operations van will also be used on extended calls such as wildland fires, structure fires, hazmat scenes, dive recovery, etc.
